Libero e Ribelle [2026]

The ‘dark night of Milan’, told in the words of those who were there. An audio project that retraces the events of the night of 16 March 2003, from the murder of antifascist activist Davide ‘Dax’ Cesare at the hands of three fascists to the brutal police beating at the S. Paolo Hospital, through the words and memories of those who experienced it first-hand.

On the evening of 16 March 2003 in Milan, three neo-fascist militants stabbed Davide Dax Cesare, a young anti-fascist activist from Milan’s social centres, to death and seriously injured another young man. That night, in addition to the fascists’ knives, the police also struck hard with their batons, violently and indiscriminately beating Dax’s comrades at Milan’s San Paolo Hospital.
More than twenty years on, Libero e Ribelle retraces the events of the night between 16 and 17 March 2003 through the words and memories of those who experienced them first-hand, from Dax’s murder in Via Brioschi to the police beatings at San Paolo Hospital.
In doing so, Libero e Ribelle does not merely reconstruct a past event, but presents itself as a work of collective memory: a narrative which, through voices and sounds, conveys the power of a lived experience and helps to keep the memory of Dax and that night alive.
