Acousmates [2024]

Acousmatic composition, spatialized through the use of Ambisonics, born from reflections on the use of natural sounds inside an acousmatic setting.

The term “acousmates,” coined in 1730 in an article describing strange noises heard during the night in a French village, is used to identify mysterious sound phenomena coming from the sky, particularly sounds of human voices or instruments perceived without a visible source.
The eponymous piece arises from a reflection on the aforementioned term: like acousmates, the sounds within the composition, derived from fragments of environmental recordings, highly modified trumpet sounds, and digitally created sounds, have unknown and, for the most part, unknowable sources. They float in the air, moving through the sound space sometimes in a homogeneous and organic manner, like elements of the same sonic phenomenon, other times in an unpredictable and frantic way.
The use of sounds derived from natural soundscapes alongside others of a more “acousmatic” nature is a choice driven by the desire to investigate the intrinsic acousmatic nature of the soundscape and its possible strategies of diffusion within an acousmatic space.
